What you're actually getting

Salomon makes some of the most competent walking footwear around, and the X Ultra 360 Leather is no exception. Leather upper for durability, GORE-TEX lining so your feet stay dry when the British weather does its thing, and Salomon's Contagrip outsole underneath. That last bit matters more than people give it credit for. Slippy bridleway after rain? You'll be fine.

Personally, I'd put these in the "serious day walker" category. Not a trail runner, not a casual trainer. If you're doing 10 to 15 miles on mixed terrain, carrying a pack, these are the kind of shoe that just gets on with it.

Who this suits (and who it doesn't)

These are for the person who walks properly. Weekend hikes, long-distance footpaths, a bit of scramble here and there. The leather construction means they'll take a while to break in compared to a synthetic equivalent, so don't wear them straight out of the box on a 20-miler. Give them a few shorter outings first.

If you want something for light trails or casual park walks, honestly these might be overkill. And if you run hot, the GORE-TEX is brilliant in wet conditions but can feel stuffy on a warm dry day.

The price question

At around 60 quid for a GORE-TEX leather Salomon, that's not half bad. These regularly sit well above that. The community heat on this deal tells its own story. Sizes from 6.5 to 13.5 are listed, but popular sizes will go fast. Worth checking sooner rather than later.
