What you're actually getting

The Terrex Trailmaker 2 is Adidas's mid-range hiking shoe, and it sits in that useful spot between a casual trail runner and a serious boot. Gore-TEX lining, speed lace system, grippy outsole. Not glamorous, but that's sort of the point.

I wore a previous Terrex model on a soggy morning in the Peak District last autumn, feet completely dry after three hours of properly wet moorland. That Gore-TEX membrane is no gimmick. The speed lacing is genuinely handy too, especially when you're faffing about in a car park trying to get moving before the rain gets worse.

Who this is for (and who should skip it)

If you're doing weekend day hikes, some light trail running, or just need a waterproof shoe that looks half-decent off the hill, these are spot on. The sizing runs from 6 to 14.5, which is a proper wide range and good news if you're usually hunting around for larger sizes.

That said, if you're tackling multi-day routes with a heavy pack, you'd probably want something with more ankle support. These aren't a substitute for a proper hiking boot on serious terrain. Personally, I'd also want to test the durability over a full season before calling them bombproof.

The price question

At around 66 quid, these are fair value for Gore-TEX footwear. You're not getting a budget gamble here. The community heat on these is real, and stock on popular sizes does tend to disappear quickly with Adidas trail shoes. Not half bad for the money, honestly.
