What you're actually getting
Whitley Neill's Rhubarb & Ginger is one of those flavoured gins that could've been gimmicky and cheap-tasting, but honestly isn't. The rhubarb is tart and recognisable, the ginger gives it a proper little kick on the finish. It's not subtle, but it's not cloying either. Pour it over ice with a decent tonic and a slice of orange and it holds its own comfortably.
I first had it at a mate's garden party a couple of summers back, straight from one of those little airline-style bottles. Even warm and undiluted it had something going on. That's usually a decent sign.
Who should pick this up
This is squarely for people who like flavoured gin but are tired of the ones that taste like boiled sweets. It's approachable enough for someone who doesn't usually drink gin neat, but there's enough complexity that it won't bore you after one glass.
Not for you if you're a gin purist who thinks anything with fruit in it is an abomination. That's fair enough, but this review isn't for you.
The honest bit
At full price it's fine. At this voucher price it's a no-brainer for a casual Friday night or a gift that looks more considered than it was. My only reservation is that the bottle design is a bit try-hard, but nobody's buying it for the aesthetics. Stock moves fast when deals like this surface, so if you're interested, don't sit on it.
