The chocolate itself
Right, so Tony's Chocolonely is one of those brands that gets a lot of goodwill points for its ethics, which is fair enough, but the chocolate also has to hold up on its own. And honestly, it does. The 32% cocoa milk chocolate is creamy without being sickly, a bit more complex than your average Dairy Milk, with a slight caramel note that lingers properly. Not a single-origin craft bar situation, but that's not what this is.
I had a square of it while making tea one afternoon, fully intending to stop at one. Ate four. The unequal segments are a gimmick, yes, but they're a charming one and they make for decent conversation.
Who this is actually for
If you buy chocolate regularly and care even a little about Fairtrade sourcing, this is a spot-on everyday option. It's not a luxury gift bar, it's a proper eat-it-on-the-sofa chocolate. At £2.66 on Subscribe & Save, it's competitive with supermarket branded stuff that tastes noticeably worse.
Not for you if:
- You want high-cocoa dark chocolate
- You find the unequal chunk sizes genuinely annoying (some people do)
- You forget to cancel subscriptions and then feel bad about it
One honest reservation
The Subscribe & Save mechanic is fine, but it's a commitment, and Amazon will keep sending these until you tell it not to. If you're disciplined about managing subscriptions, no bother. If you're not, you'll end up with six bars and mild guilt. The chocolate itself though, not half bad at all.
