Southern Comfort is not whiskey in the traditional sense. It says so right on the label, mate: whiskey liqueur. So if you're expecting a Scotch or a bourbon, put the bottle down. What you actually get is something sweeter, fruitier, with a hint of orange and a warmth that's more dessert than dram. It's 35% ABV, which is on the lighter end.
Personally, I think it gets unfairly dismissed. It had a moment in the early 2000s, became a bit naff, and never quite recovered its reputation. But honestly, mixed into a long drink with lemonade and a bit of ice on a warm afternoon, it's not half bad at all.
Who This Is Actually For
If you're building a home bar on a budget and you want something crowd-pleasing for people who don't really drink spirits, this is a solid shout. It mixes well, it's approachable, and a litre at this price point is genuinely decent value.
It is not for the whisky purist. Full stop. And it's probably not for anyone who had one too many SoCo and lemonades at a uni house party circa 2007 and still hasn't forgiven it.
