The kind of game Nintendo saves up

Donkey Kong Bananza is a proper Switch 2 launch title in the old sense: a game designed to make you feel like the hardware was worth buying. DK tears through environments, punching and smashing terrain in ways that feel genuinely tactile. You notice it. My mate was watching over my shoulder within about three minutes, which tells you something.

The destruction mechanic is the thing here. Levels aren't just scrolling backdrops, they respond. Bash through a rock face, carve your own path, collapse a ceiling onto enemies. It sounds gimmicky written down, but it clicks quickly.

Who this is actually for

If you've got kids between roughly six and twelve, this is probably the easiest recommendation I can make right now. Colourful, physical, forgiving enough that younger players won't bounce off it. But honestly, it holds up for adults too. There's enough depth in the level design to keep you engaged past the novelty phase.

Who it isn't for: anyone expecting a challenge on par with a Dark Souls or even a trickier Mario title. This leans accessible. Some players will find that a bit soft.

On the price

No discount here, £44.99 is full retail. That stings slightly when you're used to hunting deals. But for a Switch 2 launch exclusive with this much polish, it's not a rip-off either. The 646 degrees of community heat on HotUKDeals suggests plenty of people are comfortable with it. Stock has been moving fast at launch, so if you're on the fence, probably don't sit on it too long.
