What actually is this thing?

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG from Sandfall Interactive, a small French studio. That alone should tell you something is a bit different here. It's got that melancholy, painterly aesthetic you can see from the title screen, and it leans into a very European sense of tragedy rather than the usual save-the-world cheerfulness. The combat mixes classic turn-based structure with real-time parry and dodge mechanics, so you can't just mash through fights on autopilot.

Personally, the moment it clicked for me was a quiet scene early on where the world-building is delivered not through a wall of text, but through what the characters don't say. Proper storytelling, that.

Who this is actually for

If you like games like Octopath Traveler, or you've ever bounced off a JRPG because the combat felt too passive, this is worth your time. The battle system keeps you honest, and the difficulty is satisfying rather than punishing.

That said, if you're after something fast-paced or action-heavy, you'll probably find it slow going at first. It demands patience in the early hours.

The honest bit

At under £28, it's a proper bargain for what's clearly a passion project with serious production values. The 754 community heat on HotUKDeals isn't hype for nothing. My only reservation is that the pacing in the opening chapters can drag slightly if you're not already bought into the atmosphere. Stick with it, though, and it pays off.
